Snow Baby Snow

I am writing this from my cozy, cookie-filled Brooklyn apartment. Feeling very lucky to have stocked up on the essentials (wine, ice cream, diapers) and know that I don't have to go out for the next day or two except for a sled around the block. But there are many people who have to go out of the house. And these people include the doctors, midwives, nurses and doulas who will deliver blizzard babies tonight, tomorrow and Wednesday.  They may in fact help a dear friend of mine who lives just outside of New York and who is due to have her baby any moment now. And she is not alone - approximately 350 babies are born in just New York City each day. This got me thinking, what about the moms and the babies that are going to be born tomorrow?

What should my friend, a future client or a future me do if ever in this situation? I started researching and found this amazing resource from Every Mother Counts. It is an excellent read for any expectant moms in this storm and a good general read for us all. Challenging and unexpected situations can happen in labor all the time, but being prepared is critical to keep them from being true emergencies.

STORM BABIES CHECKLIST by Every Mother Counts

In addition to the list provided by EMC, ensure you have general storm preparedness measures in place. These include: having gas in your vehicle, flashlights with fresh batteries, charged phones, water, food and warmth in your house, on your person, or in your car. If going out, do your best to let others know your plans and intended route. Leave early and in daylight whenever possible. Get help when needed, calling your care provider, mother, doula, neighbor or 911 are all smart decisions depending on the situation and your level of need. And most of all, stay calm. Staying calm helps us make stronger decisions, which usually lead to better outcomes. So, especially if you are having a baby, relaxing as much as possible is key. You will help your blood pressure and oxygen levels which in turn help you and your baby during labor and delivery.

Now, for those of you snuggled up with your wine and your significant other, go have some fun. Us Doulas can't wait to see you in October (wink!).

With light, love + WARM wishes,

Ali
